Most Roo pads come in an unusual color (white or black) and when one pad needs to be replaced, you have to go back to the tech who has that color to match the other pads. From a strictly tonal point of view, alto sax is closer to trumpet than tenor sax. From a playing point of view, tenor sax is the most flexible. Of the players you listed, Lester Young, Dexter Gordon and Charlie Rouse play tenor, the others are on alto.It is a transitional model from 1932 but has all features of the 6M. So no split bell keys. I never took a sax on a plane, so I am looking for some recommendations from experienced players that play a similar sax and have found a case that works well in practice. Budget-wise, I would be willing to spend up to $300-400.However a good mouthpiece that gives you that warm soft edge tone instantly can help a lot ofcourse. A Brilhart Ebolin often gets me real close. However I had to try quiet a number of them to find the right one that just has it.
